This paper starts with some considerations on the meaning and content of various terms used over the years social, developmental, comrnunity paediatrics. The emerging epidemiology led to shift progressively form a clinical and individual child medicine to a genuine child public health: yet the contribution of human sciences should not be neglected in trying to understand and cope with the health problems of children -either healthy or ill - individually or collectively.

What about the training - pre and post graduate - of paediatricians for preparing them to these new dimensions of their professional exercice ? According to the various types of their practice, various options are proposed.

Cet article commence par préciser la signification et le contenu des différents termes utilisés au fil du temps:

pédiatrie sociale, pédiatrie du développement, pédiatrie communautaire...

L'entrée en scène de l'épidémiologie a permis de mieux passer d'une pédiatrie clinique et casuistique à une véritable pédiatrie de santé publique : encore ne faut-il pas négliger l'apport essentiel des sciences humaines dans la compréhension et la prise en charge des problèmes de santé - individuels ou collectifs - des enfants bien portants ou malades.

Qu'en est-il de la formation, initiale et continue, des pédiatries à ces dimensions nouvelles de l'excercice de leur profession ? Comment les y bien préparer? En fonction des particularités de leur pratique professionnelle différentes options sont proposées.
