Domain name

A domain name is a unique ID linked to an entity whose computers (who share a common characteristic) are connected to the Internet.

For example, sites that end with “paris.fr” are all part of the same domain, meaning the entire set of computers that host activities for the city of Paris. The system is hierarchical and allows for the definition of subdomains.
